In early May, the tidal flats of the Copper River Delta shimmer with the activity of hundreds of thousands of shorebirds. As many as 5 million shorebirds rest and feed here during spring migration. The Copper River Delta Shorebird Festival provides the ideal opportunity for bird watchers to be part of this epic migration. Many activities, workshops, and community events are offered throughout the festival. We invite you to join us in Cordova for the the birding event of the new millenium!

More than 100 bird species, some unique to the Aleutians, can be viewed in the tundra and waters of Unalaska Island. Private boat charters to Unalga Pass, a 90-minute travel north of Unalaska/Dutch Harbor, afford visitors a rare glimpse of the whiskered auklet. Together with your guide, you'll explore the rocky cliffs and rip tides of the Baby Islands - these are located in the pass and are the primary nesting site of the whiskered auklet. You may also spot tufted and horned puffins, various albatross, petrels, and jaegers among other seabirds. Thousands of birds nest and raise their young during the spring and summer months in the Resurrection Bay, Chiswell Islands, and Kenai Fjords National Park area. Cormorants, Bald Eagles, Black-Legged Kittiwakes, Murres, Puffins, Parakeet Auklet, Loons, Shearwaters, Storm-Petrels, Ducks, Falcons, Sandpipers, Skuas, Gulls, Terns, Alcids, Kingfishers, Jays, and Finches are just a portion of the birds that you can see in the area during the summer months.
Witness the birds up close in their natural environment aboard a Kenai Fjords Tours vessel, including the Puffin. Dressed in their bright summer mating plumage and parrot-like beaks, they come ashore only to nest and raise their single chick along the rocky coastline. Watch them plunge over rocky cliffs into the water and "fly" under the surface to feed on small fish and other sea life.

Explore a new world at the Alaska SeaLife Center located in Seward, Alaska the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. The ASLC is a world-class facility that combines a marine research mission with wildlife rehabilitation and public education. Watch puffins fly through underwater skies and meet sea lions and harbor seals eye to eye.
The Center's seabird exhibit has the deepest of all seabird pools in North America. The habitat recreates the birds' rugged coast living environment. Tufted Puffins and Pigeon Guillemots reside in the 105,000 gallon exhibit, which includes extensive nesting burrows and ledges for breeding and plenty of space for underwater flying. They share the aviary with Red-Legged Kittiwakes and Black Oystercatchers.
The seabirds at the ASLC can be viewed up close from above or below the water year round. Daily talks and interpretation about the birds are offered in the summer. For a more in depth experience ask about our "Puffin Encounter" and other bird programs.
