Executive Director

This exempt position reports to a Board and directs the organization toward its primary objectives emphasizing development and external relations.

Major Responsibilities

Fundraising & Membership:

  • Identifies additional income streams to offset maintenance and operations budget including grants and foundation funding; establishes and builds relationships with funding entities and agencies; oversees application to funding sources

  • Maintains current schedule of programs and education; identifies and designs additional programs and projects; secures funding for program/project expansion

  • Oversees and manages special events directed at fundraising and/or public relations opportunities

  • Maintains and expands current partnerships including auction and corporate partnerships

  • Oversees and directs functions of membership services, public relations, grant initiation and maintenance; designs programs and methods to expand membership participation, numbers and giving

  • Maintains and enhances donor program

  • Oversees production and distribution of an annual retail catalog

  • Develops a working relationship with Alaska congressional delegation and investigates potential federal funding opportunities

Public Relations/Media

  • Develops a community-wide public relations campaign; writes or approves all news releases, press releases and items of interest to media; develops public interest stories for travel trade and industry publications

  • Acts as official spokesperson for the Alaska Raptor Center on all public relations matters

  • Oversees all contacts with writers, film crews, reporters and delegates from other visiting raptor organizations

  • Develops and implements a program to share information and create/sustain partnerships with other raptor organizations

Marketing

  • Develops and manages educational programs for the public explaining and promoting the Center’s mission

  • Represents the Center at state, regional and national events; delivers or oversees educational or informational presentations; accompanies birds on all traveling programs. 

  • Acts as official spokesperson for the Alaska Raptor Center in all areas involving marketing.

  • Meets with major donors during travel.

Administrative

  • Oversees communications, public relations, member services and program staff; assigns and evaluates work.

  • Develops the annual budget collaboratively with the Operations Director;maintains regular communication regarding the budget status with the Operations Director and Board of Directors.

  • Communicates formally and informally with the Board regarding Center business; reports budget and program status regularly to the Board of Directors, as well as all other issues appropriate to the Board level.

Requirements

A combination of education, training and experience that would yield the skill base described below. Preferred qualities are:

  • Managerial experience in development, the non-profit sector, program design/development, and community partnerships.

  • Sustained interest in bird rehabilitation and related educational programs.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced skills in sustaining and enhancing a funding base.

  • Advanced managerial, organizational, and long-range planning skills.

  • Advanced oral, written and presentation skills.

  • Skill in working successfully with a Board of Directors.

  • Skill in program development and marketing.

  • Skill in building and sustaining local, regional and national relationships.

  • Ability to set and achieve goals.

  • Ability to build and sustain support for and commitment to the Alaska Raptor Center.
